Established in 1925, the Palace Museum is located in the imperial palace of the consecutive Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties. The magnificent architectural complex, also known as the Forbidden City, and the vast holdings of paintings, calligraphy, ceramics, and antiquities of the imperial collections make it one of the most prestigious museums in China and the world. In 1987 it was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Nanjing Museum is the first Chinese large-scale comprehensive museum invested by the state, and the home venue of this year’s International Museum Day in China. Shaanxi History Museum is located in the northwest of the Xi’an Wild Goose Pagoda as China’s first large-scale modern national museum. Its collection of cultural relics reaches 370,000, dating from the simple stone that human used at the initial stage in ancient times down to all kinds of implements in social life before 1840; the time span covers more than one million years. The cultural relics are rich in number and types and have high grade and wide value, among which Shang bronze is exquisite; terracotta figurines of past dynasties are of varied types and postures; gold and silver ware of Han and Tang Dynasty is unique across the country; wall paintings of Tang tomb have no equals in this world.

Hubei Provincial Museum is a primary institution of cultural relics collection, exhibition and promotion as well as an important research center of archaeological exploration, discovery and relic protection in the province. One of China’s oldest museums, Zhejiang Provincial Museum is the largest comprehensive museum for the humanities in Zhejiang, encompassing Gushan branch, Wulin branch, Huang Binhong Memorial, the former residence of Sha Menghai and Research Centre for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage. It houses over 100,000 items of cultural heritage, which cover a wide range and represent a complete sequence of eras. Among them are precious items with distinct regional features and significant academic value, such as the pottery, lacquer ware, wooden ware, bone tools and ivory artifacts of the Hemudu culture, the jade ware of the Liangzhu culture, the bronzes and primitive porcelain of the Kingdom of Yue, the celadon of the Yue, Longquan and other kilns, mirrors made in Huiji and Huzhou, gold and silver coins of the Southern Song dynasty, and paintings and calligraphic works by Zhejiang artists of the Ming and Qing dynasties. These treasures reflect the political, economic and cultural landscapes of Zhejiang during various historical periods and reveal the profound culture of the region.

As the first museum of the New China, Liaoning Provincial Museum is well-known all over the world for its rich collections and distinct features. So far, it has collected nearly 120,000 pieces of cultural relics, most of which are cultural and historic art relics unearthed in Liaoning, in 17 categories including calligraphy, painting, silk embroidery, bronze and porcelain. Paintings and calligraphy works of Jin, Tang, Song and Yuan Dynasties, K’o-ssu embroidery works of Song, Yuan and Qing dynasties, jades of Hongshan Culture, bronze wares unearthed from the hoard of the Shang and Zhou Dynasties, porcelain wares of Liao Dynasty, epitaphs of the previous generations, prints of Ming and Qing Dynasties, ancient maps, currencies through the ages are the most characteristic and influential.
