On March 7, 2025, Reachings Watercolor Exhibition opened at China Cultural Center in Stockholm, bringing together more than 120 Swedish artists and art enthusiasts for a grand artistic feast that transcends time and space.
The exhibition features classic watercolor works by renowned Chinese artist and educator Gu Yuan (1919–1996), alongside the remarkable creations of 14 contemporary artists living and working in Sweden. Gu Yuan’s works are deeply rooted in China’s ink painting traditions. Whether depicting vast landscapes or everyday street scenes, his brushstrokes exude poetic beauty and humanistic care, making each piece a heartfelt dialogue between man and nature. Complementing his works, the Swedish artists push the boundaries of watercolor with bold, experimental approaches. Their pieces use water as a medium to explore abstract, flowing forms, where minimal geometric compositions blend seamlessly with expressive textures, creating a unique artistic synergy.
At the opening ceremony, artists engaged in lively discussions, echoing a shared sentiment—the pursuit of harmony and resonance through artistic dialogue. As one of the exhibition’s curators, Maria Nordsø Lundberg, stated that the globalization has enabled artists to exchange cultures through various platforms, fostering mutual understanding and respect among different cultural backgrounds. The goal of this exhibition is to further strengthen the emotional connection and mutual recognition between the Chinese and Swedish people, allowing valuable artworks to be appreciated and understood across cultures. Participating artists highly praised the exhibition, emphasizing the significance of showcasing Chinese and Swedish watercolor works together. They believe it highlights the universal value of art and its far-reaching influence, making it a rare opportunity for cross-cultural exchange and aesthetic appreciation. Many expressed hope for more collaborative events and opportunities for artistic dialogue between Chinese and Swedish artists in the future.
This year marks the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Sweden, and this exhibition serves as a vibrant artistic bridge, adding a splash of color to bilateral exchanges. It is not only a visual narrative woven from light and color but also a vivid example of international cultural exchange. Through the silent symphony of art, the audience experiences the charm and interconnectedness of different cultures. The exhibition will run until April 25, inviting more visitors to explore the unique beauty of Chinese-Swedish watercolor art.
